The Podcast

Start the game already is researched, recorded, edited, and published by me, Christian Toth. However, this was not always the case.

This podcast project started in 2021 as a German podcast together with my cohost Felix. We took our first steps as an unnoticed variety podcast on very different gaming topics. During this time, we learned everything important about podcasting: story telling, editing, post-production and finally an idea of what we really want to do: entertaining and informative podcast episodes that go into great detail about our beloved game. This led us to relaunch the podcast in June 2022 solely focussing on Age of Empires II. Over the years, we have grown to be a centerpiece in the German AoE II Community. Until May 2025, we published one free podcast episode per week, that’s over 200 episodes that can still be listened to at any time. We also released an additional episode every week exclusively for our supporters via Steady, the German equivalent of Patreon.

Felix was going through a major life change at the time, so he wanted to take a step back from podcasting – however not entirely and our listeners on the German podcast do get to hear him at least once a month. I then had to ask myself how I could continue our podcast largely on my own. After some consideration, I thought to myself that it was a shame that our podcasts were only available to German-speaking listeners.

For this reason, I am now proudly taking our podcast to an international audience, while Felix’s influence always resonates in the background. Producing high quality Podcasts has been part of my life for many years and I see this as an opportunity to challange myself to create an even better product. For now, I will focus on producing one episode every week.

The Podcaster

Here’s a few things about me you may find interesting:

My name is Christian Toth and I live in Germany. I’m trying to hide my german accent as best I can.

I’m a researcher in the field of psychology and educational science, I’m specialized on personality psychology and media education.

My first RTS game was Command and Conquer on the N64. I started playing AoE II as a kid, pretty much when The Conquerors Add-on came out in some basement on selfmade LAN-partys with a bunch of friends.

I started playing with Build Orders and on ranked ladder with the Definitive Edition, but have followed the eSport Scene since BBQTurkmans Youtube Videos in 2017.

My favorite Civilization is the Tatars, because I love Cav Archers.

My favorite Age is Feudal Age and I hate playing late game after early Imperial Age. You may find me resigning a game way too early if it get’s to stalemate, just to queue up another game.

Content and Project Goals

My main goal is to continue producing high quality podcasts once a week that are both entertaining and informative. I don’t have specific goals I want to reach, but still created a stretch goal on Patreon. If reached, I will produce a monthly patreon exclusive episode.

Other than that, I would like to create content that adresses both casual players and competitive players and help new players to find a foothold in the complicated but wonderful world of Age of Empires II. If my podcasts help you achieve that, I’m happy with my work.
